چکیده

During their operation, modern aircraft engine components are subjected to increasingly demanding operating conditions, especially the high pressure turbine (HPT) blades. Such conditions cause these parts to undergo different types of time-dependent degradation, one of which is creep. A model using the finite element method (FEM) was developed, in order to be able to predict the creep behaviour of HPT blades. Flight data records (FDR) for a specific aircraft, provided by a commercial aviation company, were used to obtain thermal and mechanical data for three different flight cycles. In order to create the 3D model needed for the FEM analysis, a HPT blade scrap was scanned, and its chemical composition and material properties were obtained. The data that was gathered was fed into the FEM model and different simulations were run, first with a simplified 3D rectangular block shape, in order to better establish the model, and then with the real 3D mesh obtained from the blade scrap. The overall expected behaviour in terms of displacement was observed, in particular at the trailing edge of the blade. Therefore such a model can be useful in the goal of predicting turbine blade life, given a set of FDR data. © 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Finite Element Modeling of Crack Initiation Angle Under Mixed Mode (I/II) Fracture

Present study deals with the prediction of crack initiation angle for mixed mode (I/II) fracture using finite element techniques and J-Integral based approach. The FE code ANSYS is used to estimate the stress intensity factor numerically. The estimated values of SIF were incorporated into six different crack initiation angle criteria to predict the crack initiation angle. Single edge crack spec...

Scaling in fracture mechanics by Bažant’s law: from finite to linearized elasticity

We consider crack propagation in brittle non-linear elastic materials in the context of quasi-static evolutions of energetic type. Given a sequence of self-similar domains nΩ on which the imposed boundary conditions scale according to Bažant’s law, we show, in agreement with several experimental data, that the corresponding sequence of evolutions converges (for n → ∞) to the evolution of a crac...

Cracking Elements Method for Simulating Complex Crack Growth

The cracking elements method (CEM) is a novel numerical approach for simulating fracture of quasi-brittle materials. This method is built in the framework of conventional finite element method (FEM) based on standard Galerkin approximation, which models the cracks with disconnected cracking segments. The orientation of propagating cracks is determined by local criteria and no explicit or implic...

Arrest, deflection, penetration and reinitiation of cracks in brittle layers across adhesive interlayers

A layer structure consisting of two glass plates bonded with polymer-based adhesives and loaded at the upper surface with a linewedge indenter is used to evaluate crack containment. Two adhesives are used, a low-modulus epoxy resin and a particle-filled composite. The adhesives arrest indentation-induced transverse cracks at the first interface. A substantially higher load is required to resume...

Extrinsic cohesive modelling of dynamic fracture and microbranching instability in brittle materials

Dynamic crack microbranching processes in brittle materials are investigated by means of a computational fracture mechanics approach using the finite element method with special interface elements and a topological data structure representation. Experiments indicate presence of a limiting crack speed for dynamic crack in brittle materials as well as increasing fracture resistance with crack spe...
